I got round to (re-)watching this after you guys had gone. Not bad - definitely one for the history books, being the first found footage movie and all that. It's better done and more serious in intent than most 70s trash horror I've seen.
I didn't find it disturbing though - the idea that a documentary crew would go on a rampage like that is just too far-fetched. Surely a bunch of meat heads like that wouldn't be documentary makers. I think Deodato also overdid the juxtaposition of that gentle theme tune (same tune is repeated at least half a dozen times) with brutal imagery, and "Who are the real cannibals?" was a proper head-slap moment. It's like subtitles for the hard of thinking.
Worth the hype, even in a cut version. Nasty and disturbing, and a lot smarter than I was expecting.
