Shutter Island

A phenomenal piece of cinema with fantastic dream imagery plastered all over it.
Unfortunately for Scorcese it will be held up for comparison against the far superior works he has already created, which is a tad unfair. If a young, unknown director had made this we would pronounce it a work of flawless genius and then sit back and wait for him to go make X-Men movies or something.

  1. While it is wrong to compare it to his earlier work that is exactly what I did after seeing it. Which is very unfair. It was a really bloody good thriller.

I felt is sagged a bit after about an hour when there was a series of scenes where great character actors appeared for a scene and acted creepy. Each of these scenes was really good in their own right, but it seemed to curb Scorsese from having the fun he seemed to at the start. A lot of the outstanding dream imagery disappeared.

I imagine a second viewing will probably be very favourable to it.

  2. best film I've seen at the cinema for quite some time. Favourite bit? Ben Kingsley asking "why are you all wet baby?" Creepy

  3. Awesome piece of film-making - you weren't kidding when you said I was in for a treat Al! I have to say, it also makes the perception shift trick of The Glass Man look a little less original now too.
