The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey [3D]

People having lots of serious conversations about going on adventures and then lots of fights on gigantic underground bridge networks. Ace.

  1. Not having a wealth of golden memories of The Hobbit to give me those tingles of joy, my stupid brain refused to let me enjoy this for what it was and insisted on informing me 'it's not like LOTR' throughout.
It didn't help that since LOTR it's become pretty standard to see a long shot full of hordes of various creatures and close ups of growling nasties.

Loved the giant rock men fighting though. Overall though I have to hold my hands up and declare 'it's not you, it's me' and hope it doesn't feel gilted.

  2. Overall I thought it was pretty darn good and on a pretty even level of quality to LOTR, but it lacked a certain wow that LOTR had due to, as Ali said, this not being something new and different anymore. I thought the first couple of hours were the best, really flew by. The final section, after they leave Rivendell, I found a bit tiresome with the exception of the Gollum sequence.

The major issue I had was the merging of the light children's story of The Hobbit to the LOTR trilogy. This meant a sequence like the trolls with it's snot and comedy pratfalls (perfect for 8 year olds) sits in the same film as multiple beheadings so it becomes unsuitable for those 8 year olds.

Very much looking forward to Smaug, less so an epic battle of dwarves.

  3. I dunno, I loved a good beheading when I was 8.

  4. Seen this pretty late, which is a pity as otherwise would've made my top 10 of the year. Probably edging out Argo. Loved the lighter tone, but also thought the LORT additions were well handled. How many more films can Christopher Lee have in him? Saw this in controversial telly tubby vision, which was godawful at the start - like it was done on a camcorder - but started to make sense when it came to gollum and the goblins. Knocked it out the park, Jackson!
