The Rum Diary

Hunter S. Thompson's origin story laced with Bruce Robinson's wistful melancholy proves to be a combination that delights.

  1. Unengaging and underwhelming comedy/drama with minimal comedy and less drama. Occasional moments of the "real" Thompson distract from Depp's fine, subdued performance while highlighting how much more interesting he was after this. I can see why the book wasn't published for so long.

  2. Hmm, a split. Unless opinions are undivided though, I think I can gauge who to believe on this one by asking what you both think of Withnail & I (the Bruce Robinson connection obviously).

  3. This wasn't a bad film, it just never engaged me. It's amiable and whimsical where it could (should) have been engrossing and thought provoking.

    Withnail's a good movie.
