Django Unchained

Tarantino's best in some time would still be just as good if it were 45 mins shorter.

  1. Most like Jackie Brown in that the main hero is not that interesting, the supporting characters are much better (3 are particularly ace here), it has less QT nonsense (a good thing), but less QT magic (not such a good thing), an unnecessarily drawn out end and is a 14 year old virgin's idea of a serious film. Better than Jackie Brown, not as good as Inglourious Bastards.

  2. I can't say I didn't enjoy it, but it felt like Tarantino was sitting by my side throughout the film, constantly poking me in the ribs and reminding me 'hey, I make COOL films, isn't this COOL, look at that actor being COOl in my COOL film, have you noticed the COOL song playing in my COOL film? I want to make COOL films'

  3. Really loved it, especially after watching Gone With the Wind for the first time. A proper movie, with something to say.

    1. Which is the proper film with something to say? Surely you don't mean Django.

  4. I reckon it says plenty about American history and its portrayal on screen, about black history and culture, about how to be good in the face of evil and about the portrayal of violence.

I call it a proper film in contrast to basterds, which, great as it is, isn't really a proper film, at least not in the classical mode. Django's a lot more straightforward film with characters you can invest in.

Biggest problems for me were the hood scene, broomhilda's portrayal and, obviously, tarantino's obligatory appearance. Though I'm sure he's just doing it to annoy us.

Maybe better than basterds but not as good as Jackie Brown?

    1. Definitely not as good as Jackie Brown. The third act is OTT nonsense and so self-consciously cool it's painful. Before that though, it was a pretty enjoyable movie - one of Tarantino's better efforts post- Jackie Brown.
