Wes Anderson movies always do exactly the same thing and yet somehow erratically flip-flop between being tiresome and brilliant. This one is brilliant.

Prisoners

One of those very rare movies that had me shouting at the screen desperately trying to get characters to see what they needed to see. What an incredible film.

I Came By

Starts like so many other ‘home invasion that uncovers something sinister’ movies and my eyes rolled in anticipation of all the cliché to come, but then it steadfastly refused all cliché instead following a much more realistic route and that impressed me. By the end I wasn’t sure it was entirely successful, but good effort all round.

Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse

Made me feel young as I absorbed the exhilarating, non-stop sugar rush of visual excess and the expertly delivered laugh out loud pop culture references. Made me feel old as I wished it would just pause for breath occasionally and at the very least muster up a proper ending, but…

Transformers: Rise Of The Beasts

If you’re not a fan of the original Transformers, you’re not going to like this movie. And if you are a fan then you’re going to fucking hate it.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honour Amongst Thieves

Successfully captures the vibe of a group of people sat round a table making mad shit up and laughing their asses off, just like the best D&D sessions should be.

Spiderhead

In attempting to be clever it persistently forgets the story it’s trying to tell and instead comes off as very stupid indeed.

The Boogeyman

Flings itself from the top of the modern horror tree and hits every cliche on the way down with an efficient clinical precision before landing slumped against a trunk made up of close-ups of doors opening.

Okja

Ostensibly a film bearing a strong ‘farming and eating animals is bad’ message, but this message is confused by everybody happily throwing chicken and fish down their gullet whilst the titular superpig is given extremely human mannerisms turning the message into ‘farming and eating people is bad’ and I think we knew that already.

Pay The Ghost

Nicholas Cage stumbling about in cookie cutter horror looking bewildered as to just how he ended up here.

Enys Men

Still struggling to decide if this was an enthralling mood piece wrapped up in atmosphere inducing ambiguity or a simple story frustratingly obfuscated by the director’s wanky arthouse intentions.
