Your opinion of the movie will likely depend on your opinion of Seth Rogen. I personally enjoyed it a lot and had a smile on my face throughout. The aforementioned fights and split screen were marvellous and 3 of very few typically Gondry moments and Christoph Waltz is great fun at the villain. The weak link was Cameron Diaz who only seems to be there so make it clear Rogen and Kato aren't fuck buddies.
This has been in development hell for around a decade. A long time ago (I believe before Eternal Sunshine) Gondry was attached to make it, but left before Rogen and Evan Goldberg got hold of it and completely rewrote it. So while it is an odd choice is is something he's had interest in for a long time.
I thought having Gondry direct was a strange choice... All seems like a bit of a waste of time, money and effort.

Grogan's fine as support, but he's too ugly to be a lead actor. Like a strategically shaved Chewbacca.
