Boils Lovecraft down to the basics of a soggy atmosphere, a lot of screaming and a whole bunch of surprise tentacles. I enjoyed it, but I'm glad it wasn't longer.

Cast A Deadly Spell

A hard boiled detective tale draped in Lovecraft references and wobbly rubber monster FX that’s a bit too hardcore on occasion for kids and a bit too throwaway fluff for adults the rest of the time.

H.P. Lovecraft's The Unnamable

The opening scene is a vague attempt at adapting Lovecraft’s story I suppose. The rest not so much.

H.P. Lovecraft’s The Deep Ones

Has the look and feel of a Channel 5 True Story movie but then characters would start quoting Lovecraft poetry, or a tentacle would squirm out of a vagina, or somebody would get raped by a sea monster and I couldn’t help but be entertained by such ludicrous juxtaposition.

Color Out Of Space

It might be Lovecraft’s story, but it’s definitely Richard Stanley’s movie and it’s fantastic to see him delivering in spades on the promise made by his first two films over a quarter of a century ago. Here’s hoping we won’t have to wait so long for the next one.

The Dream Quest Of Unknown Kadath

A film in the loosest sense, more a graphic novel crudely animated by cutting it up and sliding it about a bit under some fairly wooden voice acting for an hour and a half. A bit like watching storyboards for the most amazing animated movie you will never get to see.

The Dunwich Horror [Witches: The Darkest Evil]

 

Dismal adaptation of Lovecraft that reduces a brilliant tale down to wooden actors trading stillborn dialogue as they rattle around rough approximations of the original plot points until they visibly give up in the face of special effects so shit my brain threw up inside my skull.

 

The Beyond [...E tu vivrai nel terrore! L'aldilà/ Seven Doors Of Hell]

 

Lucio Fulci once again exhibits an astounding level of incompetence, this time adding a smattering of vague Lovecraft references in an attempt to spice up his usual mix of unnecessary gore, baffling incoherence and coma inducing boredom.

 

Bleeders [Hemoglobin/ The Descendant]

 

A whiny goth discovers he is related to a clan of subterranean dwellers who look like an unfortunate collision of plasticine and spunk so he eats a couple of children and fucks his hermaphrodite twin sister.

A strong parable about why you shouldn't be a whiny fucking goth.

The H.P Lovecraft society, the last people you would expect to fuck about with Lovecraft, have lovingly crafted an authentic 1940s film adaptation that ineptly fucks about with Lovecraft.

Marebito [The Stranger From Afar]

 
A Japanese horror film with heavy Lovecraft overtones from the director of The Grudge and starring the director of Tetsuo. Win all round.
 

Cool Air

Good effort from this amateur short Lovecraft adaptation that primarily consists of an old man sitting in a chair telling a story whilst he slowly shifts in and out of focus.

H.P. Lovecraft's Bride Of Re-Animator [Re-Animator 2]

Since the events of the first movie Herbert West has perfected his glowing serum so it will now reanimate and fuse body parts. He convinces his roommate not to move out by promising to rebuild his dead girlfriend starting with her heart which is then combined with various other discarded body parts. Meanwhile the bad guy from the first film, who was reduced to just a disembodied head, forces a surgeon through hypnosis into grafting bat wings to his temples so he can fly around West's house laughing maniacally.
The kind of thing that would've made Lovecraft shoot himself in the face.

H.P. Lovecraft's From Beyond

I could be wrong but I'm fairly certain that director Stuart Gordon's three favourite things are H.P. Lovecraft stories, early Cronenberg movies and breasts. In that order.

The Last Lovecraft: Relic Of Cthulhu

A head-on collision of slacker comedy and the Lovecraft Mythos. Works better than expected.

Necronomicon

This Halloween I watched masses of tentacles explode from a lady's eye sockets, David Warner drag out his own melting by periodically tearing lumps off himself and a group of interdimensional beings sucking bone marrow from dismembered limbs whilst the previous owner looks on with shrieking insanity.

Matango [Attack Of The Mushroom People]

Begins with some heavy Lovecraft overtones that quickly give way to a version of Lost made in sixties Japan before finally melting down in a hallucinogenic shitstorm of giant rubbery mushroom people.

The Curse

Awful eighties rot that takes some plot points from Lovecraft's 'The Colour Out Of Space'. Not all its plot points mind, I don't recall Lovecraft ever attempting to instil dread with an exploding cow.

The Call Of Cthulhu

One of Lovecraft's finest moments faithfully adapted and superbly realised as a 1920s silent movie.
