A beautifully old fashioned rendition of a true Dahl classic, adapted as faithfully as you could hope for in the modern cinematic landscape, the only niggle being I can't put my finger on why it was all a bit underwhelming.

Doesn't deserve the hate, but still not great.

Central Intelligence

The Rock's powers continue to grow at an alarming rate, here he some how manages to make a Kevin Hart movie into a likeable one.

Beneath

As if being trapped six hundred feet underground due to a collapsed mine shaft isn't bad enough, a bunch of coal miners and a random daughter also have to contend with a terribly hokey 'is there or isn't there ghosts down here too?' subplot as well.

Now You See Me 2

Overcrowded ensemble piece that manages to exceed the incredibly low bar set by the original, mainly by romping about like a low grade airport thriller on crack.

The Neon Demon

Two of my favourite movies ever are Meyer's Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls and Argento's Suspiria which, in my eyes, makes it virtually impossible for The Neon Demon to fail.

American Movie

Gently told documentary about the kind of insistent film making that will be familiar to anybody who has tried making a film armed only with a camera, their grim determinaton and the sympathy of all their friends and family.

Night Of The Creeps

Successfully crams in aliens, sorority house axe murders, the reanimated dead, space slugs, a booze soaked cop, zombie animals, explosions and Dick Miller.

The Secret Life Of Pets [3D]

Invites comparison to a bunch of other kids movies but doesn't come off favourably against any of them.

Cloverfield

Totally worth another watch for the moment when, having watched a character get lifted off a steel pole impaling her shoulder, the teenager turned to me and flatly stated 'She should just put a tampon in either end of that and she'll be fine.'

The Conjuring 2

An insistent adherence to the facts of an obvious hoax clashes with the ludicrous fright attempts, including gems such as a lady being pushed over by a painting or a dog slowly popping into rubbery CGI, further hampered by a slew of characters who are visibly struggling to give a shit.
So insipid I forgot I'd watched it.

Intacto

Posits that if the acquisition of luck were a superpower then those blessed with the abiliy would spend all their time engaged in petty squabbles over who was the luckiest.

The Nice Guys

Shane Black makes his movie again.
That's OK though, Shane Black's movie is always excellent, he should feel free to make it as many times as he wants.

Pitch Black

The teenager had this one marked twenty minutes in when she declared 'This movie is terrible. The storyline is cack and everybody just swears instead of doing something interesting.' The rest of the film then steadfastedly proved her correct.

Warcraft: The Beginning [IMAX 3D]

Gets the world just right, presents itself on a truly epic scale then throws so much story at you the whole affair becomes exhausting.
